Compatibility with existing supply chains and point-of-sale infrastructure is key to reusable packaging becoming a regular part of mainstream retail.
The goal of this page is to illustrate how a single data carrier on a reusable container can provide different information, therefore perform different functions, depending on what type of scanning equipment is used.
In existing single-use systems, a data carrier like a barcode or QR code provides information that facilitates inventory management and helps process transactions. Such information might include price, quantity, SKU numbers and other details. Typically, the product and its packaging are not distinguished and tracked as a single item.
Reuse systems often require an item’s packaging to be tracked separately from the product it contains. A data carrier is used to convey additional information between actors in the reuse system, such as the reuse system operator, collectors, transporters, and washers. This could include information needed to process a return incentive (such as a refundable deposit, discount on future purchases, or rewards points), the owner/operator of the packaging, and how the packaging can be used (hot or cold beverages, cold foods, etc.).
PR3’s Digital Standard provides a way to achieve both traditional inventory management and point-of-sale functions and the new functions needed for a reusable packaging system with a single data carrier. Consolidating to a single data carrier increases clarity and convenience for both customers and retailers.

Why This Matters
Using a single data carrier allows retailers and system operators to identify when a specific reusable asset is returned, enabling deposits, incentives, and accurate tracking.
Data Reusable Asset Data at Point of Sale
When a reusable asset is scanned using Point-Of-Sale software, standardized data is immediately available to retailers and system operators.

What Users See When They Scan a Reusable
Scanning a reusable container with a phone provides the information needed to return it correctly.
Why It Helps You
By scanning a reusable container, users can quickly find where and how to return it. A single data carrier reduces confusion and makes reuse easier.
