PR3’s Recommendations for the Global Plastics Treaty Ahead of INC-4

Ottawa, Canada

23-29 April 2024

Reuse must be a central part of the Global Plastics Treaty.

Recycling, refill, and reuse are often confused, leading to a prolonged reliance on systems damaging to human health and the environment. PR3 recommends that the Global Plastics Treaty adhere to the waste management hierarchy and prioritize the more favored options of reduction and reuse. This includes setting reuse targets and requiring standardized product design to reduce plastic demand and increase reusability. Standardized design criteria for reuse labeling, packaging design, washing & sanitization, collection systems, and methodology for tracking environmental and social benefits supports interoperability between reuse systems. Global standards for reusable packaging systems will enable systems to scale, resulting in significant decreases in system costs, climate emissions, and plastic pollution.

Standards Touch Everyone: Innovations to Broaden Inclusion in Standards Setting

Pittsburgh, PA, United States

Tuesday - Thursday, 9-11 April 2024

On Thursday, PR3 will be presenting a framework for enhancing the equity of standards development at the Society for Standardization Professionals' (SES) Annual Conference. Join us! Standards have a significant impact on products, services, and systems with which millions of people interact every day. As such, the process of setting standards is generally meant to be inclusive and actively solicitous of diverse viewpoints. But in practice, equitable and broadly inclusive standards development is challenging to achieve. The standards community faces a wicked question: How to reconcile the need for broad inclusion in standards development with the intensity of the task? This session will explore ways SDOs are grappling with this question - attempting to create conditions that foster broader and more equitable participation in standards development.

Reuse must be a central part of the Global Plastics Treaty.

PR3 is co-hosting a side event at UNEA-6 alongside the delegations of Chile and Fiji and the European Investment Bank. Reuse: A Climate and Plastic Solution will explore strategies for scaling reuse as well as financial mechanisms and recommendations for the ongoing INC negotiations.

We shall address the need to revitalize packaging reuse as part of the ongoing negotiations for a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution.

Panelists will explore standards for global scalability of reuse and discuss possible financial mechanisms and recommendations to INC4 and INC5.
